If You're Not Happy, You're Right on Track

We all want to be happy. It's a universal desire that transcends culture, race, and gender. Happiness is often seen as the ultimate destination, the culmination of all our efforts and aspirations. But being unhappy is also a good thing. Why? Because unhappiness is the very beginning point of getting happy – the critical point that allows you to change things for the better. In this blog, we will explore the significance of our dissatisfaction, its role as catalyst for growth, and how accepting our discontent and negative emotions can lead us to true happiness.

Necessary Evil

Imagine a life where happiness reigns supreme, where negative emotions cease to exist, and everything is just perfect. You’re happy all the time. It might sound appealing at first, but upon reflection, it becomes clear that living life this way would be devoid of purpose and growth - not to mention boring. Negative emotions, such as frustration, sadness, anger, or fear, are an integral part of the human experience and they are necessary. They serve as signposts, guiding us towards the changes that need to happen in our lives. It’s all about balance. Our experiences, especially the ones that we interpret as negative, are designed to bring us closer to being balanced or centered. In order to have balance, you need opposites. If there were only good things in life, we would not understand what bad things are – and vice versa. You need the good, the bad, and the balancing of good and bad to experience peace and harmony. Without the contrast of emotions, we would lack the motivation to tackle challenges, overcome obstacles, and strive for personal development.

Redefining Negative Emotions

It's time for a paradigm shift when it comes to negative emotions. Rather than accepting negative emotions as uncontrollable or inevitable, let's redefine their significance. Instead of dismissing, distracting, or denying that we are having these uncomfortable feelings, try instead to understand the messages they convey. For example, if you're feeling frustrated with your job, that frustration is a clear sign that something needs to shift. It could be pursuing a new job that aligns with our values or initiating an open conversation with our boss about workload and responsibilities. The desire to honestly understand why things aren’t going the way you want is the most significant step in changing your life for the better. By fully immersing ourselves in these emotions and deciphering their messages, we can identify the necessary changes that will lead to a more purposeful life.

But Everything is Going Wrong…

Even better! Why? Because when overwhelming unhappiness seeps into multiple aspects of our lives, it's a perfect opportunity to examine the patterns that contribute to our distress and evaluate if there are any themes emerging. By recognizing recurring issues across different aspects of our lives, such as work, relationships, and friendships, we gain insight into the root causes of our discontent. Are we consistently overlooked for promotions at work? Do we feel like a doormat in our relationships? Are we shouldering an unfair burden of effort in maintaining friendships? Identifying these patterns allows us to pinpoint and address the specific areas that require change. You may find that one change or perspective might improve your happiness in all areas of your life.

Once we have identified the patterns, it's time to reclaim control over our happiness. Considering the circumstances in the examples above, maybe it’s time to extend the same kindness and care we offer others to ourselves, set a few boundaries, and wholeheartedly respect them. This might involve clearly communicating our needs at work, advocating for ourselves in relationships, or reassessing the dynamics of our friendships. However, with each small and manageable step towards positive change, we regain a sense of empowerment and balance. Seeking support from trusted friends, family, or professionals can also provide valuable guidance and assistance during this process.

Practice Introspection

And yet, it's easy to remain stuck when we feel bad. We allow ourselves to become consumed with our own negativity, drowning in the chaos of our thoughts, that we almost forget that we have a choice to change. However, no matter where unhappiness lingers in your life or how difficult your situation may be right now, it's important to remember the power of acknowledging your discontent. When we pause and acknowledge our negative emotions for what they truly are - signals - a subtle yet profound shift occurs within us. It is in this moment of acceptance and understanding that we find ourselves standing at the crossroads of realization and healing. This simple act is the first step on the path towards dissolving any vagueness or uncertainty surrounding your situation and shows the care and determination you have for yourself and your well-being.
